Overview
The Academy for Automotive & Mechanical Technology is designed to serve students who are interested in careers related to the automotive industry. The Academy offers students the opportunity to be trained in the first NATEF (National Automotive and Technicians Education Foundation) Certified Public High School in Philadelphia and to interact with the business community in preparation for transition into the workplace or post secondary education or training programs.

The Automotive Academy is a newly renovated off-site facility (apart from the high school) with instruction based upon national business and industry standards of NATEF, ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) and I-CAR (International Collision and Repair) organization.

  • Students in this Academy have the opportunity to:
    • Take courses in career specific areas, including brakes, steering and suspension, engine performance and electronics, and Collision Repair.
    • Participate in programs designed to enhance their leadership skills and students’ ability to serve the community in meaningful ways.
    • Participate in summer internship and enhancement programs offered by Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University, MAACO, Philadelphia Parking Authority, Sunoco, Automotive Dealers Association (ADA) of the Greater Philadelphia Region, Skills USA, Automotive X Prize Competition, Carver Science Fair, ATC (Automotive Training Center), UTI (Universal Technical Institute) and NASCAR.
Academy’s Industry Advisory Board and other partners support the program by providing practice interviews, speakers, tours and internships for students and by working with Academies staff to develop curriculum and train teachers. Board members for the Academy currently include representatives of Community College of Philadelphia, Sunoco Inc, City of Philadelphia Office of Fleet Management, Subaru of America, MAACO, AAA, Central City Toyota, Haines Street Collex, AFSCME Local 1637, MATCO Tools, Hunter Engineering, and United Parcel Service.
