Site
Edward W. Bok High School

Overview
The Academy of Process Technology is the only one of its kind located within the Philadelphia School District. The Academy was created to introduce students to career possibilities in refinery, manufacturing and engineering industries. The curriculum is supplemented by a number of programs and activities designed to prepare students for entry level jobs in business and/or college entrance.

  • Some of the special opportunities include:
    • Upon graduation, Sunoco, promises entry level employment for qualified students. Through each grade level students are required maintain high grades, complete a driver education certification and perform physical exams similar to the tasks performed daily at the Sunoco refinery. Attendance and punctuality are key factors in selection criteria for employment.
    • The Philadelphia Water Department, has structured an entry level employment program for graduates. Positions are available for students who are interested in working for the city agency and building upon their skills in technology and engineering.
    • Delaware Valley Community College has worked in partnership with Bok High School to develop exempt coursework for Process Technology students. Courses are directly linked to technology careers and are supported as tools of learning by our various business partners. Successful completion of college curriculum is a pre-screening guide used by our business partners for employment.
    • The Process Technology mentoring program is structured to offer support, guidance and career exploration for juniors and seniors. Sunoco has partnered with the Philadelphia Academies to conduct one-on-one mentoring sessions monthly.
    • Colorado School of Mines in Denver, Colorado has a structured summer program for students interested in the sciences and engineering. Several students have been afforded the opportunity to participate in this outstanding program of study.
The Business community plays a vital role in the program’s success. Business partners make possible special program enhancements such as internships, curriculum development, field trips, honor roll incentives, or equipment donations. The Academy’s Industry Advisory Board and other partners support the program by providing practice interviews, speakers, tours and internships for students and by working with Academies staff.
