A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Sterling now lives in Greater Philadelphia. In addition to his work with PAI, Sterling is a licensed Real Estate Agent and enjoys exercise and spending time with family.
As President & CEO of Philadelphia Academies, Inc., F. Christopher Goins leads organizational operations, public advocacy, and resource allocation. He is dedicated to impact elevation and has a deeply held belief in the power of education to help young people discover and pursue their purpose in life.
With nearly 25 years of educational experience in diverse capacities and settings, Chris is nationally recognized as a dynamic and visionary leader passionate about improving student achievement and promoting social justice and equity.
Chris holds a Bachelor’s in Secondary Education with a concentration in History from NC A&T University, a Master’s of Educational Leadership from the University of Cincinnati, and is currently pursuing doctoral studies at Temple University. These educational experiences have shaped his understanding of the needs educators have, enabling more impactful leadership that is attuned to the needs of his staff. Before PAI, he served as President of Girard College and held roles with Thrive Chicago and Noble Schools, where he furthered his understanding of how to facilitate education and best aid staff.
Originally from Greensboro, NC, Chris has seen firsthand the systemic issues that plague marginalized youth that he now works to address. Now a Philadelphia resident, he loves that Philadelphia isn’t afraid to elevate people of color into leadership positions. While in the city, he loves to cook, collect vintage clothing & decor, and pamper his model dog, Major.
As Senior Director, Development, External Affairs & Impact, Tamir is PAI’s strategic connector for fundraising, communications, marketing, government affairs, and data utilization. He was inspired to join the organization to further his personal mission to support and uplift students in the city of Philadelphia.
Tamir currently holds a Bachelor’s in Strategic Communications & Public Relations from American University, a Master’s of Education specializing in English & Special Education, and is pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Education Policy & Leadership. His educational background has given him a keen understanding of how best to represent PAI’s work, along with the needs of educators and students.
Previously, he served as Director, Development & External Affairs. In addition to his work at PAI, he has served as an 8th Grade Educator, School Climate & Culture Leader, Political Aide, and Senior Council Staffer. He founded UrbEd Incorporated as a student, serving 5 years as Executive Director.
Tamir is a native of Southwest Philadelphia, appreciating the food and culture of the city. He is a Life Member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
As Senior Program Director, Cheryl Lafferty oversees all PAI programs, leading Program Directors and Managers in preparing strategies, improving systems, and supporting staff with program implementation. She leads with a focus on empowering individuals while maintaining a dedication to social justice and equity.
Cheryl holds a Bachelor’s degree in Ancient Studies from the University of Maryland, a Master of Divinity from Palmer Theological Seminary, and is a graduate of the Keystone Development Partnership’s Registered Apprenticeship Navigator program.
Prior to her current position with PAI, she served as Chief of Staff and Executive Assistant & Fund Development Support Specialist, gaining deep insight into the history and operating values of the organization. She was previously the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Rhawnhurst Turning Point Youth Center and served as Youth & Music Minister at Redemption Lutheran Church.
A proud native of Northeast Philadelphia, Cheryl values Philadelphia’s diversity, history, and sense of uniqueness. She has run 2 marathons, 2 half-ironmans, crochets as a hobby, and is a loving aunt.
As Director, Workforce Development, Crystal Lanier oversees PAI’s Workforce Programs, including Early Childhood Education (ECE), Tourism & Hospitality Management (THM), Philly Tech Gateway (PTG), and the Pre-Apprenticeship in the Construction Trades (PACT) Program.
Crystal is a veteran of non-profit workforce development management and is passionate about building pathways for students to access careers. She previously held roles with Horizons Youth Services and Wilmington Job Corps Center, among other non-profit organizations.
A graduate of Lincoln University, Crystal earned her Master’s of Human Services from that institution. She brings a deep understanding of how to prepare individuals for professional success, paired with a wide-ranging knowledge of industry needs across diverse sectors to PAI.
A native of Philadelphia, Crystal is a fan of the city’s diversity, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the food scene. She is a skilled cook and baker and enjoys bringing people together through food.
As Manager, External Affairs, Kevin Brandon shines a light on PAI’s impact by leading the organization’s media relations, social media presence, website development, and broader communication strategies. He also supports the board of directors, ensuring accurate records and strong governance practices are maintained.
Kevin previously served as PAI’s Marketing & Communications Coordinator and as Special Projects Coordinator. Before joining PAI, Kevin held roles in the insurance industry and worked as Event Engagement & Volunteer Manager at Susan G. Komen Philadelphia.
A graduate of the University of Hartford, Kevin earned his Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Government. He also holds a 4-course Digital Marketing Certificate from Wharton Online.
Born in Worcester, MA, raised in Lewisberry, PA, and now a Philadelphia resident, his favorite part of Philadelphia is Fairmount Park. He enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, reading, and running.
As Manager, Data, Impact & Tech Programs, Prosie Palad specializes in data management and its application to education issues to promote programmatic and student growth. She also provides guidance to PAI’s after-school technology program.
Prosie joined PAI as a former educator and early employee at an EdTech startup, seeing PAI’s tech bridge program as an opportunity to combine her experiences.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Prosie earned her Bachelor’s in Political Science. She previously held the role of Tech Bridge Coordinator at PAI and was a 2019 Teach for America Corps member, teaching 7th grade Social Studies & Science in Eastern North Carolina.
Originally from New Jersey, Prosie is now a Philadelphia resident. She enjoys exploring cities and learning new languages.
As Principal Coordinator, Development, Jordan Thomas supports strategic fundraising and donor engagement efforts at PAI. A member of the External Affairs department, Jordan is responsible for donor data and database management, campaign execution, stewardship processes, event coordination, and supports board committees.
Moved by the opportunity to positively impact schools by attracting more resources to the organization, Jordan joined PAI after serving as Marketing and Development Coordinator for Liberty Ministries.
Jordan is a graduate of Penn State University having earned his Bachelor’s in Business/Corporate Communications. He also earned a Digital Marketing Certification from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
A native of Collegeville, PA, Jordan now lives in Philadelphia and best likes the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. He enjoys travel, photography, golf, and spending time with family and friends.
As Grants Consultant, Susan Lowry serves as a thought partner to the PAI team, supporting development efforts through grant prospecting, collateral development, proposal creation, and by providing other services.
Susan believes all youth have potential and deserve access to resources that will help them realize their best selves. As the owner of SL Non-Profit Solutions, LLC, a consultancy pracitce, Susan has served the non-profit sector since 1995 working at times as Assistant Executive Director of Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, the Executive Director for TOVA, Artistic Projects for Social Change, and the Vice President of Development at Philadelphia Youth Network.
A graduate of Smith College, Susan earned her Bachelor’s in Art History from that institution. She then attended Columbia University where she earned her Doctorate in Art History.
Susan is a New Jersey native, and raised her family in the Greater Philadelphia area. She later called Old City home and currently splits her time between Sedona, AZ and the East Coast to spend precious time with her daughters and granddaughters as well as friends and colleagues.
As Communications Intern, Michelle Nguyen is a valued member of the External Affairs team. A School District of Philadelphia alumnus, Michelle enjoys interacting with current students and bringing her unique perspective to PAI’s communications.
Seeing what PAI does for schools really inspired her to help and grow the organization to appeal to a younger audience. Among her many skills are graphic design, video editing, content creation, and bringing humor to the office. She is currently a Senior at Temple University, expected to graduate in the Spring of 2026 with a degree in Advertising.
A Southwest Philadelphia native, her favorite part of Philadelphia is Little Saigon in Passyunk Square. Michelle is Vice President of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority Incorporated and collects physical media as a hobby.
As Senior Grants Accountant, Jenna Rubendall provides strategic financial planning, executes budgets, provides accounting services, and oversees organizational grants. She joined PAI after realizing a desire to share her skills with a non-profit driving real change in the community.
A graduate of West Chester University, Jenna earned her Bachelor’s in Accounting and is currently pursuing her CPA designation. With a strong command of numbers and financial concepts, Jenna was previously employed by Spread Bagelery as Senior Accountant and oversaw financial operations for all 19 of their locations.
From Reading, Pennsylvania, Jenna enjoys Philadelphia’s walkability and abundance of restaurant options. On the weekends, she enjoys taking her dog on hikes.
As Manager, Middle School Programs, Mychal Barr oversees both the Middle School Success Network (MSSN) and Middle School Career–Connected Learning. In his position, he leads PAI’s Middle School Programs and provides coaching and professional development services to school leaders.
Mychal joined PAI after recognizing that his previous experience as an educator could be amplified by working across multiple schools to implement stronger systems. He approaches his position from a hands-on perspective and values open communication.
A graduate of Temple University, Mychal holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. Prior to his current role, he served as Middle School Success and Data Manager at PAI. Before joining PAI, he gained extensive experience in education and youth development through roles such as Mentoring Program and In-School Suspension Coordinator with AmeriCorps and EducationWorks, as well as Time and Attendance Coordinator, High School Dean, Climate Support, and Special Projects Coordinator.
Although he was born in Virginia and raised in New York, Mychal has grown to enjoy Philadelphia, citing Northern Liberties as his favorite neighborhood. He enjoys spending time with family, traveling, music, and watching or playing sports.
As Middle School Success & Data Coach, Ubaid Bhatti is a driving force behind PAI’s Middle School Success Network. His work includes designing data utilization tools, identifying trends, and monitoring school interventions. He also provides coaching to four assistant principals and principals with the intention of helping school leaders build effective systems and team practices.
Ubaid’s work is motivated by a desire to help ease the transition of students into middle school. He is accomplished in breaking down complex theories and systems into implementable programs. A graduate of Drexel University, Ubaid holds his Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. He also has earned the Executive Coaching Certification from Messy Roots.
Born in Doha, Qatar, Ubaid has been a Philadelphia resident for over a decade now. In that time, he’s fallen in love with the rivers of Philadelphia, where he runs and bikes. Otherwise, he can be found cooking, bragging about his beautiful cats, and coaching middle as well as high school soccer.
As Director, 9th Grade Success Network, Nadia Schafer leads the 9th Grade Success Network, a network of 28 high schools working on best practices to support 9th Grade On-Track rates across the School District of Philadelphia. As a founding partner of the 9th Grade Success Network since its inception in 2018, Nadia draws on her years of experience in providing coaching and technical assistance to school leaders and teacher teams to lead PAI’s project team and the work at large.
She dedicates herself to making a difference and was drawn to PAI for the opportunity to help students realize their full potential. Nadia views adolescence as a special stage of life and is dedicated to building the capacity of Assistant Principals and school leaders to ensure students not only succeed academically, but also grow in confidence, self-awareness, and connection.
Nadia earned a Master’s of Science in Statistics, Measurement, Assessment, Research, and Technology from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and a Bachelor’s in Politics concentrating in International Relations with a Spanish minor from Messiah College. At PAI, she’s previously worked as the Director, On-Track Success Networks & Evaluation; Assistant Director, Data Supports & Evaluation; Manager, Data Supports & Evaluation; Digital On-Ramps and Data Specialist; College and Career Specialist; and Project Assistant.
Raised in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland, and a proud Philadelphia resident since 2010, Nadia values the authenticity of Philadelphia residents, appreciating the grit and honesty of the city. She loves to try new restaurants, attend concerts, bike, practice yoga, and adores her cat Cleo.
As Assistant Director, 9th Grade Success Network, Kathryn May serves as a key leader of the 9th Grade Success Network, where she supports both coaches and assistant principals. The 9th Grade Success Network supports high schools in Philadelphia to implement effective meeting strategies, utilize data, and track and evaluate tiered student interventions.
Kathryn is passionate about the power of public education and was inspired to join the team, recognizing the opportunity to support educators across the School District of Philadelphia directly and, in turn, countless students.
A graduate of Arcadia University, Kathryn holds her Master’s in Educational Leadership as well as her Master’s in Secondary Education and Teaching from the University of Pennsylvania. She also has additional certifications in Instructional II: English 7-12, as well as Administrative I: Principal PK-12.
Prior to PAI, Kathryn worked at the School District of Philadelphia for 12 years as a high school English Teacher and Teacher Coach. This allows her to connect meaningfully with educators and roots her perspective in earned classroom experience.
Kathryn was born in England (UK) and grew up in Massachusetts. Now a resident of Philadelphia, she calls Graduate Hospital home and loves the hustle and bustle of Center City.
As 9th Grade Success & Data Coach, Kristie (Kriss) Barnes supports school administrators in creating systems that promote student success. She is inspired by the knowledge that elevating school administrators can in turn change the lives of thousands.
Kriss began her career in education as a City Year AmeriCorps member at Universal Audenried Charter High School. She went on to work in youth workforce development with Chester City Hall and served as a caseworker and mentor for first-time juvenile offenders at the Boys and Girls Club of Chester. Returning to education, she became a Behavioral Specialist at Enlightenment Academy before joining Chester High School, where she taught and provided behavioral support. She later advanced to Director of Student Services for the Chester Upland School District and most recently served as Director of Curriculum for the Andrew L. Hicks Jr. Foundation, developing programs to strengthen student achievement in and beyond the classroom.
Kriss holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, a Pre-Law Certificate, and a Master’s degree in Human Services from Lincoln University. Her academic background provides a strong foundation for understanding societal systems and implementing programs that promote equitable outcomes.
A proud native and resident of Chester, PA, Kriss describes herself as a self-identified nerd with passions for politics, urban planning, creative writing, public speaking, and plus-sized modeling.
As 9th Grade Success & Data Coach, Maura Edwards specializes in supporting assistant principals in cultivating impactful 9th-grade teams to increase 9th-grade on-track rates. She cares deeply about the success of students and teachers and is invested in using her skills to improve graduation rates and outcomes.
Maura holds a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and Political Science from Temple University, along with a teaching certification from the University of Pennsylvania’s Urban Teaching Residency. She previously held positions as a 9th and 10th Grade English Teacher, an AP Psychology Teacher, and a Grade Team Leader at Hardy High, and has served as a consultant to education and healthcare professionals establishing new CTE high schools.
A native of Lehigh Valley, she has been a resident of Philadelphia for the past 10 years. During this time, she’s fallen in love with the city’s parks and arboretums. In her free time, she can be found running a small vegan baking business from her kitchen, gardening, reading, exploring with her dogs, and discovering ways to be a better steward of the planet.
As 9th Grade Success & Data Coach, Sherley Olopherne partners with assistant principals at five community high schools to strengthen 9th Grade Academy systems. She supports schools by analyzing student data, co-developing strategies, and implementing research-based interventions that improve On-Track rates and open equitable pathways for first-time ninth graders.
Sherley brings over a decade of experience in education, spanning roles as a special educator, compliance manager, teacher leader, and GSA advisor. She has designed and facilitated professional learning for both students and adults, built staff capacity in special education compliance and instructional practice, and led initiatives to advance equity through culturally responsive programming.
She holds a Master of Science in Education in Urban Education with a focus on Students with Disabilities (Grades 1–6) from Long Island University. Her academic and professional background equips her to advocate for diverse learners, ensuring they receive the supports necessary to thrive. Sherley has also earned fellowships and grants to advance STEM education and to develop inclusive LGBTQIA+ curriculum.
A Philadelphia transplant, she enjoys the vibrancy of Germantown’s community spaces and local businesses such as Uncle Bobbie’s and Deke’s BBQ. Outside of her work, Sherley curates educational and social experiences for youth and adults, and she is also a photographer, traveler, and home cook.
As 9th Grade Success & Data Coach, David Rietzen focuses on analyzing data, strategic planning within schools, facilitating school staff professional development, and researching new education practices & theories. David’s charisma and transformational coaching style helps school leaders develop effective school systems that match the unique needs of their schools, while complementing their own personal leadership styles. David is known for his wide-ranging interests and ability to foster cross-collaboration between teams.
Driven by a desire to further the reach of the 9GSN, David pushes the 9th Grade Success Network team to extend their reach. He has done this through project managing the development of the 9th Grade On-Track Playbook. David brings a unique perspective to his role, having previously participated in the 9GSN as a Teacher Leader at Benjamin Franklin High School. He holds a Juris Doctorate in law as well as a Bachelor’s in both Philosophy and Religion from Rutgers University.
Born in Philadelphia, David spent much of his childhood in South Jersey. A man of many hobbies, you may find him spending his spare time paddleboarding, skiing, playing pickleball, candle making, attending music/sporting events, or pursuing one of many other interests.
As 9th Grade Success & Data Coach, Dell Steckel coaches 9th-grade assistant principals in data analysis, structural best practices, and intervention strategies designed to improve On-Track rates among students as well as developing and facilitating professional learning experiences for school staff.
Dell is passionate about supporting students through creating and refining school systems. She enjoys creating space for educators to network and collaboratively respond to student needs. Prior to PAI, Dell worked as a School Based Teacher Leader in the School District of Philadelphia and has held a number of other positions as an educator.
A graduate of Azusa Pacific University, she holds her Bachelor’s in English Language and Literature. Dell attained her Master’s in Educational Leadership and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Eastern University. She has additional certification as a PA instructional II in Pre-k to 4, English 7-12, ESL Program Specialist K-12, and PA Administrative Certificate, Principal K-12.
Dell is a native of Northern California, but has called West Philadelphia home for over 20 years. An educator since 2002, she is a proud mom to two teenage boys.
Deneen Newland joined PAI with a strong belief in the organization’s mission to fill critical gaps in partner schools and make a lasting difference in students’ lives. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and Biology and a Master’s in Public Health at Bryant University and the University of New England, respectively.
Deneen provides event management, administrative, and communications support for the 9th Grade Success Network and other organizational initiatives. She also helps keep operations running smoothly, creating an organized and efficient work environment that supports PAI.
Before joining PAI, Deneen worked with Project HOME and Mighty Writers, supporting programs that empower young people and strengthen communities. She’s passionate about collaboration, storytelling, and helping every student find opportunities to thrive.

She also oversees the development of program coordinators, with an emphasis on guiding their professional growth and success.
A believer in the power of early exposure and mentorship, Erica designs opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience, build networks, and develop critical soft skills. She was drawn to PAI’s mission because of its unique position at the intersection of education and workforce development.
Erica holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Rosemont College, which has provided her with a critical understanding of policy and informs her leadership. Before stepping into her current role, she served as Coordinator, Workforce Development at PAI, and held previous positions with Job Corps and Valley Forge Military Academy & College.

Principal Coordinator, Workforce Development – THM
As Principal Coordinator, Workforce Development – THM, Stephanie Shaw serves as a leader within PAI’s Tourism & Hospitality Management program. Her work includes facilitating workshops, post-secondary exploration, student industry exposure, and management of PAI’s scholarship distributions.
Stephanie’s mission is to empower young students to realize their best future selves. She holds a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice Administration from Mansfield University and a Master of Administration of Human Services from Chestnut Hill College. Prior to PAI, she served as Career Transition Services Counselor at Job Corps, HFA Advocate III at Maternity Care Coalition, and was a Human Resources Coordinator at JEVS at Home.
Born in South Philadelphia, Stephanie still considers that neighborhood home despite living all over the city. She enjoys Philly’s culture, passion, and cheesesteaks. In 2014, she took a solo vacation to the Dominican Republic, making 15 life-long friends.
As Coordinator, Tech Bridge Program, Brian Leftwich supports Philadelphia Academies, Inc.’s Philly Tech Gateway initiative, which introduces high school juniors and seniors to careers in technology through after-school programming and pre-apprenticeships in Cybersecurity and Data Analytics. In this role, he helps connect students to industry-aligned opportunities while ensuring programming remains both engaging and impactful.
Brian’s passion for technology and commitment to supporting young people led him to PAI. His prior experience as a Student Success Coach with City Year gave him a unique perspective on student needs, which he now applies to designing and delivering programs that prepare students for postsecondary pathways in the tech sector.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Brian is inspired by the city’s growth and eager to contribute to shaping its future. Outside of work, he enjoys trying new candies, gaming, and tackling challenging math problems.
As Coordinator, Workforce Development – PACT, Dimir Leftwich helps students access in-demand jobs through PAI’s Pre-Apprenticeship in the Construction Trades (PACT) Program at Mastbaum High School. This work exposes students to various opportunities in the field, with an emphasis on carpentry, welding, electricity, and plumbing.
Dimir enjoys reaching students outside of traditional education pathways. He is known for his ability to break down complex administrative needs into simple, executable ideas for students. As a relationship builder, Dimir prides himself on establishing a strong rapport with all of his students through his work with PACT, as well as coaching boys’ tackle & girls’ flag football at Mastbaum High School and supporting other extracurricular activities offered at Mastbaum.
A graduate of Lyon College, Dimir holds his Bachelor’s in Business Administration & English. His prior experience includes teaching K-8 Health in the Philadelphia School District and working for City Year Philadelphia.
Dimir was born and raised in North Philadelphia, graduated from Central High School and continues to value the city’s food and entertainment scene, always seeking new experiences.
As Coordinator, Workforce Development – ECE, Mijon Powell leads PAI’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) Pre-Apprenticeship Program at Parkway West High School. This program positions students to become educators by combining early career exposure to the field and hands-on instruction. Mijon’s role includes facilitating work-based learning workshops, organizing site visits, and career coaching.
Mijon joined PAI as part of his lifelong dedication to service and interest in helping students access meaningful careers. He further values diversity and giving back through community service.
A graduate of Albright College, Mijon holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science & Public Policy and Administration. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration Program at Villanova University.
Mijon is a native of South Philadelphia who has become familiar with many areas across the city through his dedication to strengthening his impact on others. In his free time, he enjoys content creation with a focus on fitness, modeling, photography, and videography.
As Coordinator, Workforce Development – THM, Yvonne Vaughan works within PAI’s Tourism & Hospitality Management Program. She focuses on delivering a relevant curriculum, strengthening industry partnerships, and providing meaningful experiences to her students.
Yvonne treasures opportunities to work directly with students and introduce them to the Tourism & Hospitality employment sector. She is a graduate of Lincoln University and holds a Master’s in Human Services. She is also a Certified Guest Service Professional and holds an OSHA 10 certificate.
Born and raised in Luton, Bedfordshire, England (UK), Yvonne now lives in “the States.” She enjoys fishing, and is a lover of Philadelphia’s music and arts scene, along with the Parkway Central Library.
As Coordinator, Workforce Development – THM, Sajon Weeks specializes in building relationships between industry partners and students. Working within PAI’s Tourism & Hospitality Management (THM) program, he believes that students deserve support both outside the classroom and through the power of partnerships.
Sajon holds a Bachelor’s in Sociology from the United States Military Academy and a Master’s in Public Administration from Seton Hall. As a US Army Veteran, Sajon remains a leader and has the unique ability to build scalable projects that tackle systemic societal issues.
He grew up between Trinidad and Tobago and New York City. A current Philadelphia resident, Sajon’s favorite part of the city is Fishtown. He enjoys cheering on the Eagles when not spending time with his three cats or playing kickball recreationally.
